What are Charter School Admission Requirements?

So how do you get into a charter school like ours? Here are a few things to keep in mind if you want to enroll your child at a charter school.

Charter School Admission Requirements 

Since charter schools are contracted through the state. They differ from private schools that require tuition and often stringent admission requirements.

Every state has set guidelines and requirements for its public schools. This includes any charter schools established within one of its communities. In Arizona, specific Pupil Admission Requirements must be followed by all charter schools. These admission requirements include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Complete application (will vary by school) and submission before any specified deadline.
  • Applicants considered eligible until the “number of applications exceeds the capacity of the program, class, grade level, or building” (Arizona Dept. of Education).
  • Returning students and siblings of currently enrolled students receive enrollment preference.

Sometimes capacity makes it difficult for a charter school to accept even siblings of current students. Even when application deadlines are met promptly and correctly. When demand exceeds enrollment capacity, the Arizona Department of Education requires “an equitable selection process such as a lottery” with preference given to siblings already enrolled.

Location also can play a role in how admission to a charter school works. For example, any student that lives within the public school district boundaries of a charter school, may receive admission preference if the charter school is sponsored by the local school district’s governing board.

Our AmeriSchools Tucson campus serves K-8, and Yuma North and Yuma South both are open for grades K-6 for a fee. Note that for both our Yuma campuses, we charge parents for a full day of kindergarten since the state only pays for a half-day. Parents are responsible for the remaining portion.
