Yuma K-6
Spotlight on Leadership
Bill Wachunas is enjoying his second year as Principal at AmeriSchools Academy. Bill is a long time resident of Yuma who has worked and volunteered in the community exemplifying the AmeriSchools value of Community as Laboratory. His energy and commitment to providing challenging educational opportunities for all students is recognized among the students, staff, parents and the educational community. You will not find Bill sitting behind his desk very often. He is often in classes, working with students, mentoring staff or sponsoring one of the after school recreation clubs. His enthusiasm is contagious as he looks forward to the challenge of improving student achievement and supporting a strong community relationship.
Teaching the Standards through the Arts and P.E.
Learning happens in the classroom, at the art easel and out on the playground. AmeriSchools knows that children learn in many different settings and that art, music and a healthy body are all important parts of development. In order to make sure students have opportunities to develop all their talents Mr. Millis provides SPECIALS throughout the week.
- P.E. includes stacker competitions, exercising with music, volleyball, and general fitness
- Music includes learning about notes and scales as well as learning songs for schoolwide performances.
- Art is everywhere around us and integrated into all content areas. Hands-on art projects have included ancient Egypt and Native American life as well as seasonal art. Come in and enjoy the beautiful original art your children create.
Community Explorations Set a Standard
AmeriSchools Academy at Yuma has provided many opportunities for students to participate in the community. This allows students to learn from everything around them as well as to give back to the community. We are partners in educating our children. Here are some of the very exciting things scheduled this year:
- Cocopah Indian Tribe
- Fry's
- Betty's Kitchen, a local wildlife area
- Challenger Space Center
- Community Food Bank
- Special End of Year Experience for promoting students
AmeriSchools Academy Yuma celebrates second year as a PERFORMING PLUS school based on the Arizona State Department of Education. Our students are learning and achieving at higher rates as compared to other students across Arizona.
AmeriSchools Yuma had a surprise visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog
Clifford (Mr. Millis) was a wonderful addition to the annual book fair. The school earned over $1,500 that will be used to purchase children's literature and class sets of books.
AmeriSchools Yuma Enjoys Community Support
AmeriSchools is very grateful for the award of over $2,500 from Sam's Club and WalMart as well as $800.00 from the Challenger Space Center.
